After all, your computer can spell check for you, but it can't write a good novel " I'll agree with that as I had all my incentive & imagination knocked out by "Bully School Teacher's" (ex service men). If I put pen to paper I can"t think of what to write. A system called "ROTE" The teacher reads up subject for tomorrw's class, So don't ask questions. or you'll get thumped. Not even a post card to send home, buy them & put them away till I get home. My very 1st time in a "forum" & "talking". Sad but true, Spacey. Military discipline is not the ideal way to educate young people. The next generation reacted to that and encouraged creative writing. Then the pendulum swung back and Howard imported George Bush's worst ideas and we have NAPLAN- which has disastrously narrowed the curriculum. My wife marks these exams and often comes across hilarious and inspired writing, but cannot reward this because of the strict marking guidelines. Phil Perry
Someone on another site asked me why I use the word 'WHILST' instead of 'WHILE' . . .it's something I've done since primary school, but it has fallen into disuse nowadays. I still like it though, like a comfortable pair of old slippers. . . Some interesting BTL comments on the site link below. . .like this one ' While and whilst are more or less interchangeable when the meaning is although or whereas. For example: Whilst many people agree that SUVs are hazardous on the roads, little or no effort has been made to limit their use. One could easily substitute "Although..." or "Whereas..." for Whilst and the meaning would be the same. However, whilst also means "when" and is considered more formal and probably even archaic. I do see it in older (including 20th c.) novels, though, and I think this meaning should be known and understood by english speakers. For example: I saw him while I was waiting for a train. OR I saw him whilst I was waiting for a train'. You can remove the words 'I WAS' from that line and the meaning remains unchanged. While Vs Whilst? English is by fr the most complex known language. This is one of the reasons that I NEVER correct someone's blog comment which contains spelling errors. If I understand what the commenter is saying, that's good enough for me. The only social comment I would make on this is that in my own experience, the older a person is, the more accurate the grammar and spelling appears to be. I was beaten with a wet tea towel by my Mother s a raw youth, to correct the above ! ( It didn't hurt though ) We were, also made to learn spelling by rote, and thumped by teacher for errors in written work. Education has become more streamlined nowadays I guess, since every so often, teaching methods change. For better or worse ?. . .the Jury is still out on that. Marty_d
My wife marks these exams and often comes across hilarious and inspired writing, but cannot reward this because of the strict marking guidelines. I hope she finds a way to subversively encourage their imagination. My 7yo loves making "books" filled with quite good illustrations and very badly spelled text. At first I was a bit worried about it and wondered why his school wasn't teaching him correct spelling. Then I realised that the imagination that goes into his stories is far more valuable. facthunter
Kids are born with enquiring minds. Somehow we destroy that, to a great extent. The LAST thing a normal growing active child would be comfortable with is sitting down and listening. It's resorted to for economy and other "grading" reasons. We compartmentalise everybody. When you meet some person.. .. What are you? One response was from some academically aspiring types "I'm a Biological Organism in a hostile Universe" that would probably get you a killer punch in some circles today. What they are really asking is what do you do for a living?. That has been the defining thing of "what a person is" in past times. It's not adequate today even if it ever was, is it. It's easier to put someone in a box, rather than think about it much. Thinking must be very painful for so much effort being put into avoiding it. Nev A result of our society applying military-industrial organisation to the education of our little kids. The first few weeks is mostly regimentation, so an overworked teacher can cope with a horde of individuals. My grandies are enduring that process as we speak. It's heartbreaking to see the change in their attitude to school. As a teacher I wrote hundreds of school references, which were meant to pigeon-hole kids according to their potential. Each time I meet up with ex-students I'm delighted to find how wrong I was. So many of them went on to achieve things I never could have imagined. old man emu
Maybe if some politician has the gonads to implement Gonski 2.0, our kids might flourish. However, you can't tile a roof until the wall studs are standing. I still hold that Readin', Writin' and 'Rithmatic must be mastered by the time a child gets to upper Primary level. By Writin', I mean the ability to express oneself in words, both written and spoken. I'll leave the topic of "correct" spelling out of the equation. A message from teachers: we're already struggling, will Gonski 2.0 even help?
facthunter
Headmasters have to get involved with funding the school . They should be in that position because their forte is education and managing a team of effective educators.. NOT fund raising. Nev
spacesailor
O M E said "Writin', I mean the ability to express oneself in words," NOT in the school I went to. Expression, definitely Not allowed at all. By way of the big-stick. spacesailor
red750
If you are a recruiting officer with a dozen applications on your desk, which you have to reduce to a short list of four or five for interview, which ones do you discard first, the one with correct grammar, spelling formatting etc., or those that look like an eight years old's homework? There are some people I would not hire to collect trolleys from the carpark. And yes, I do have experience managing staff. I managed a computer centre with a staff of over 50 for 5 years. The Daughter of some friends of ours ( Nine years old ) appears to be a budding poet. I've seen some of her work, based upon quite normal experiences, but she sees more deeply into situations and her writings are most interesting. Her syntax is a little poor, but what the hell. . .I most Certainly DO NOT have permission from her parents, otherwise I would love to post some of it. They are strict Catholics, and are appalled by some of the stuff she writes. . .shame that. . . . If they FAIL to stifle her intelligence and interest in Classic literature well beyond her years,. . ., I believe she will go far. . .
Old Koreelah
"Out of the mouths of babes" is an overused reaction to the brilliant insights children often display. I've often thought that education is just a process of limiting a kid's creativity. A bit like pouring a wide stream of liquid into a funnel, so it all comes out as a narrow, homogenous, boring stream.

David2ayo
1. Today, I learnt that Kansas City is in Missouri. 2. Today I also learnt that anyone printing a sign with a plain background on the print makes it very easy to hack. Bugger! (or, maybe not ....) Phil Perry
1. I thought that this geographical anomaly was mildly amusing all the same. 2. That poster is a Definite 'Hack'. . . a very clever one mind, as the perspective is near perfect for the angle of the shot. ( This can be achieved by any graphics Geek using Adobe Photoshop ) You'd have to be a veteran of typography ( Like me perhaps. .30+ years in the Sign, Print & Graphics industry .) to notice that although the same font family has been used for the whole line, the 'Weight of stroke' is marginally greater than the text further up. Also, the kerning ( space between letter characters is around 5% greater than the text further up the poster. You're half-right with the plain background too,. . .as a coloured one would require converting to a bitmap, and re rendering plus over-typing the lot. . . tedious. A clever attempt though. A+ score for your diligence Sir David.
