Cosmick
Yeah, the old Party Line, we were 2 short one long. For those that dont know what im talking about. Several properties on the one single line (party line). each property had its own signature ring controlled by turning the magneto handle. Many party lines would feed into a local exchange with an operator who could access the outside world for you.
facthunter
And listen to everyone manually . Today they can listen to everyone digitally. Fake pictures make out you said something you never did. Brave NEW World.. Truth harder to find than a giant diamond. Nev

Litespeed
I remember the days when homes had a actual hallway. It had a little seat combo to take the phone and phone book. And a red dial phone. It was great as mum had the thing welded to her ear and the family were far away out of earshot.
old man emu
Red dial phone !!!!???? If we could be so lucky. We had a black Bakelite lump on the three-legged hall table, right by the lounge room. No extension chord. Permission required for each phone call. Long Distance ? Forget it. red750
Space, admittedly it was when I was a kid, but we had no electricity, dunny down the back (a hole in the ground, on a farm. Kids bathed in concrete wash troughs in the wash house (outside laundry), water heated in a copper over a wood fire. The only running water was a pipe from the rainwater tank. nomadpete
Earth? What do you want an earth for? These were very common. I still have one. Nowadays every appliance is double insulated so an earth is rather academic. Back when the double light adaptor was common it was a bigger safety issue because every appliance had a metal case for you to grasp. They were common because every room had a light fitting but no power point. Most homes had only one power outlet for the whole house. Our house had two. One was in the hallway, the other in the kitchen. There wasn't a power point for your radio.
