I would have thought algebra was invented by someone named Al-Gebra...

The noun algebra comes from Arabic word al jebr, meaning "reunion of broken parts," which appeared in the title of mathematician al-Khwarizmi's famous book on equations.

It sure was a big invention, that is using a zero. The whole story is a good one about how religion holds a society back.

My wife was born also in 1948 just as charles was but less noticed. Well not by me, I notice her every day.

Anyway, there is a big question about weight-loss I have .....   Q: surely there is a way that is better and faster than the old-fashioned way of diet and exercise....  Eg, liposuction or  wegovy .

Unfortunately, you must remember that it took years to make yourself obese, therefore getting un-obese will take time.

For most of us, weight loss is a matter of changing habits. We have become overweight by eating servings that are too large for our needs. We also need to allocate time to the preparation of our meals so that we don't give up and head off to the local takeaway to get a serving of food for our self which could actually feed two persons.

Apparently Ozempic and Wegovy are the same drug, marketed to different audiences. Also, according to my exercise-nurse, they don't have long term effects and putting the weight back on is a problem for stoppers of the drug/s.

Thx for the comments OME. My recollection is that the weight ( I am just over 100kg ) went on quickly after I stopped trying to keep it under 90kg. I blame my 70th birthday for this ..." threescore years and ten shalt be thy days "... the bible says. Well i sure outlived any male relative, my father died at 67 which i foolishly thought at the time was incredibly old.

It takes a concerted effort at self delusion.

Smaller plates with smaller serving, helps trick the mind.

Each morning grab a glass of water before brekky - it give the stomach some sense of being a bit full.

Have a bowl of fresh fruit near the kitchen - after a meal force yourself to eat a piece (when you are heading for the fridge for a snack.

Eat more vegetables.

Avoid weight loss drugs.

Etc.

The hardest part is getting vegetables into yourself.  My son has been going to a nutritionist because he's got some issues with weight and eating.  She recommends 5 cups of vegetables a day.

That's a lot of vegetables, especially since you don't want the dodgy ones like potatoes.  Protein is important too, especially as you get older.

Basically a balanced diet and exercise is what you want.  Heard a scientist talking about the ideal amount of sitting per day - 6 hours or less.  While that sounds like a lot, many jobs including office workers, drivers, even pilots - have an awful lot of sitting included, then there's meals and Netflix.  The ideal balance is apparently a bit over 8 hours sleep, over 4 hours light exercise (stuff we do every day - walking around, making dinner etc), and over 4 hours moderate exercise (fast walking etc) - which I thought was an awful lot!

I would add here that although I know what the right thing to do is, I don't do it.  Usually the only exercise I get is karate once a week and PT once a week - I really need to walk more.
