A new book on wartime derring-do by Monty Halls, called Escaping Hitler, has a tale about an SAS soldier in Italy who lost his trousers down a well, having hung them on the side to dry.

Fortunately, his pals soon came back with a German prisoner. The SAS man argued that he should take the Nazi's trousers but his leader stood firm: no man under his command would operate in enemy uniform.

What's more, they needed their captive to talk them out of trouble (with a gun at his back) if stopped. He would make a less convincing argument, it was pointed out, if he were just in his underpants

( At least he wasn't debriefed )
