pmccarthy Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 While Ned was a teenage prisoner, the novel Lorna Doone became a best seller and he was captivated by the story. In the book a gang of outlaws wearing bulletproof iron armour terrorise the community and steal stock. Illegal stills operate in secret beside mountain streams. Lawyers exploit their poor clients but in the end the hero is given a pardon. For a boy from the bush it was all believable and he was able to live the dream, operating his still on Bullock Creek, making the armour and stealing stock. He was hoping to negotiate a pardon but when Joe Byrne shot Sherrit instead of kidnapping him as planned, Ned knew they were doomed. They got stuck into the grog at the Glenrowan hotel and his story ended.
