As if Trump wasn't bad enough, there is an army of enthusiastic backroom misfits and plotters busily developing policies and selecting potential MAGA appointees to fill influential administrative positions in a Trump government, specifically in order to facilitate his anti-democratic and dictatorial ambitions and further their own careers.  As things currently stand, Biden is a lost cause despite being basically competent and decent. Even many who voted for him last time are no longer supporting him because they blame him for the economy and other problems around the world. So much for American Democracy.  The best result would be for Trump to end up in jail or be kicked off the ballot in some states.  If he gets back in again, it will be a disaster that the Americans have brought on themselves and the world by being thoroughly conned by a vindictive crook.

As they keep saying though,  there's nothing in the constitution that prevents a convicted criminal,  in jail, from being elected president. 

One would wonder about the mentality of the voting public that would desire said criminal to be their figurehead to the world, but it could in theory happen.

Makes you wonder how hosting other world leaders would look.  Would they have to come in visiting hours?

Biden will go down in History as a "place-marker" President. He seems to have captained the ship of State through choppy waters. We don't hear much about what he has achieved because there's been a bigger circus in town. At least he hasn't made any disastrous decisions that have cost US lives in offshore military excursions. Obviously his presidency has been hampered by the opposite Party's actions in the House of Representatives. In fact, what has happened with the governance of the USA over the past four years highlights the inefficiency of having a Head of State and its executive arm separate from the people's elected representatives. 

 

Which leads me to support a system for a republican Australia that has a Head of State having only the powers that our current vice-regal Head has. Currently our vice-regal Head is nominated by the Government and that nomination is approved by the Monarch. If a non-partisan means of making that nomination and approval can be decided upon, then I think an Australian republic would avoid the problems the USA faces.

Americans have a weird concept of what "democracy" actually means. Their "democracy" means you are ruled by religious fundamentalists, who turn a blind eye to worship of guns and money as the countrys primary religion, and who let immorality in many forms flourish - and even encourage it, in many cases.

 

Not a lot different really to the fundamentalist dictatorial regimes they regularly carry out war against, claiming those fundamentalist regimes hate America, and must be dismantled.

The irony of the hatred the Americans produce seems to be lost on them.

 

Their inhabitants live in constant fear of their neighbours, who they consider dangerous radicals, because they vote differently.

And if their neighbours just happen to trespass on their property, it's O.K. to shoot them, because their God gave them the right to shoot anyone they consider "dangerous".

There's many types of democracy and even the originals (e.g. Athenian) didn't give the vote to women or slaves, so only about 30% or the city's population. 

The Roman republic was heavily influenced by the leading classes and the vast number of 'clients' (men paid a bit each day to give loyalty and services to their patron) each rich man could use to sway the vote.  Not to mention that the plebs only got a say if the outcome wasn't already decided by the aristocratic vote. 

So even the US and most other modern democracies are far fairer than the originals.

Having electorates within states  is not a great problem. IF it depends ONLY on the collective vote for the entire county People would feel denied local representation. Simple Majority rule doesn't guarantee Justice and fairness by itself.  Nev

It's interesting to see Trumps strategy in the current court proceedings, as using the charges and proceedings in a case where he can't be jailed, as a simple extension of his political grandstanding.

 

The N.Y. State court actions have made it even more of a picnic for Trump and his rusted-on followers, as he points out that he's being maligned on trumped up charges by a Democrat Judge, and a Democrat Attorney General - thus continuing his carefully-orchestrated story of "them and us", and how he is just being used as a pawn in a political witch hunt.

 

What I'd really like to see is Trump nailed by someone he appointed, on the basis the appointee wouldn't dare go against him. Perhaps some of the Federal charges against Trump will produce that result.

He already knows that he's lost the fraud case, but he also knows that the court is crowded with reporters who will relay all his antics and grievances to his loyal supporters. His team was apparently sending out begging emails while he was in the witness box trashing the judge and prosecutors. He is just playing to the court of public opinion. Once he's found guilty, he will be off to the appeals courts.  I can't fathom the gullibility of the majority of Americans.

Trumpy  has learnt a lot from 'reality' TV shows. Now he is using the courts as a free publicity opportunity, he's playing to the viewers. And playing them like a trout.

Certainly a cunning strategy.

He just doesn't care, he has a lifetime of doing what he wants and trusting others to pick up the pieces and nail it through.
