spacey, was Geoff a relative of one of the 455 Sqd. airmen? I remember some time back, a book being written by someone who had a father or uncle in 455 Sqd. in Russia. Wasn't sure if there's more than one book on it.

When I was a kid, our next door neighbour was a ex RAAF WW2 bomber pilot. On one raid, they'd arranged to refuel in the Soviet Union somewhere before returning to the U.K.. They were looking forward to getting out and stretching the legs, but were surrounded by armed Soviet troops and not allowed out of the aircraft while they were there. He said to my dad, "Bloody hell, and I thought they were on our side".

Geoff's father was in the RAAF And I believe wrote the first book on his experience in Russia.

Geoff did extensive investigating of the "North Atlantic Convoy Escort Squadron" then wrote the second book. ( hope I got it right).

Thanks space, that must be the book I was thinking of then - written by the son of one of the 455 Sqd blokes. It would be interesting reading; must get hold of a copy.

Willedoo. Geoff was/is selling them himself at mates rate. A few years since I was last in touch with him, as he was my flying instructor.

I hope he's well & still instructing. Camden or the Oaks :0425251939 (booking phone number)

I tried to find him online but like looking for the "needle in the haystack". perhaps another forum member will know him & have more information, (hopfully ).

Getting back to old mate Donny.

If there's one good thing he can lay claim to is it that he is the only POTUS who has done anything to ease relations between the USA and North Korea in nearly 70 years. Sure, he started off with a p!ssing contest, but once that became a dribble, he's had more meetings with the President of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea than any other POTUS. At least the two Presidents are sitting down at the table together. Their philosophies are an alpha/omega pairing, but if they can reach the middle mu/nu pairing on peace, then Don will have done his country, and the non-Communist world a great service.

For your perusal, from Aircrew book review :

"The RAAF In Russia. The original was the result of six years of Geoff’s work – and an interest stemming from listening to his father’s stories of No. 455 Squadron’s epic Russian adventure. Twelve years and even more research later, the second edition is a self-published paperback of 149 A4 pages.

Flying the Hampden, a type retired from Bomber Command, on anti-shipping torpedo strikes was not one of the ‘better’ jobs for a crew but it was a task carried out with dedication and skill. The very nature of torpedo work meant little time to recover the aircraft if it was hit during the run in (or post-drop). Any chance of a crewmember taking control of a Hampden with an incapacitated pilot was severely hampered by the narrowness of the aircraft’s fuselage and the virtual isolation of each of the crew – a particular disadvantage the Bomber Command crews (some of whom were now the torpedo crews) were only too well aware of. As is typical of these men they took the risks in their stride, just as they did the challenge of flying to Russia - a destination beyond the range of the Hampden - to help protect the Arctic convoys from German surface ship attack.

The author does not forget the groundcrew who, after a long sea journey, endured harsh conditions that made the simplest of tasks difficult. It was, even during such exceptional times, an epic journey by anyone’s standards ... and the author follows it every step of the way.

More than 120 photos and diagrams support Geoff’s narrative as he takes us to Russia and back. This is the book for the Hampden operations in Russia. There’s more on Geoff’s website and you can buy the book direct from him."

On the Stephen Colbert show, someone asked a Democrat contender if they could say one positive thing about Donald Trump.

"Yes, I'm positive he shouldn't be President."

This is part of Donald's "Make the US great" program. It is how the US government is going to try to give advantage to US trader who use the well-established "mail-order" sales model.

In recent years Universal Postal Union members have encountered serious problems triggered by the enormous increase in e-commerce originating from the Far East, where the terminal dues do not cover the unit costs of delivery in the destination countries, and the volumes are so big that the losses cannot be compensated by better terminal dues from other traffic.

In 2016, a new remuneration system was implemented with a focus on e-commerce, but while the 2016 reform balanced the costs to the delivery services, postage costs for shippers are still asymmetric. As of 2018, US companies pay more than twice as much to mail an item from a US plant to a US customer than does a manufacturer in China to mail an item to a US customer. On October 17, 2018, the United States declared its withdrawal from the UPU, effective October 17, 2019, with the US planning to switch to self-declared rates.

For Australia, this withdrawal might affect the amount we pay for items sent from aircraft parts suppliers like Aircraft Spruce and Specialty.

Trump is driven by human greed, arrogance and hate. He is doing enormous damage to the environment and lots of non-rich people.

I fear that Pence has an Old Testament agenda that could snuff out our entire civilization.

Not long now and the frenzy starts, or maybe it has already started, only 15 months and Trump will be up for re election.

I reckon he will get his second term. Half the population thinks Republicans are born to govern and the other half seem to be deluding themselves that they are going to get rid of Trump.

Mark it down I am tipping Trump for a second term.

I reckon any sane bloke in his position would be bargaining all he could.

That would mean dumping all his trumping mates in.

People like that and his fellow party friends tend to have egos the size of planets. They rarely kill them selves, their self belief and sociopathic tendency's won't allow it.

I reckon people in very low places reached out and solved the problem.

Pity the poor victims who will never get justice.

And all the rich low life mates get to party another day or elected.

As much as I wish for him to be resoundingly defeated, I fear you're right.

You'd think in a country of 300 million people the Democrats would be able to find a high quality candidate, but unless Elizabeth Warren pips Biden and Sanders to the post, it probably won't happen.

Democrat or Republican, their dollar bill will still bear the words "In God we trust".

It should be " Mars in speramus" - "In Mars we trust", because the USA are the most warlike country in the World.

An interesting word is "trump"

We often think of it from its use in card games: to "play a card of a suit ranking above others," 1520's.

But the homophones of "trump" have meaning that might apply to our good mate Don.

"To trump": To "surpass, beat," 1580s. "I was about to win the auction by this other bloke trumped my bid." No doubt an extension of the meaning related to card games.

The best homophone to apply to Don might be to "fabricate, devise," 1690s, from trump "deceive, cheat" (1510s), from Middle English trumpen (late 14c.), from Old French tromper "to deceive," of uncertain origin. Apparently from se tromper de "to mock," from Old French tromper "to blow a trumpet." Explained as "to play the horn, alluding to quacks and mountebanks, who attracted the public by blowing a horn, and then cheated them into buying. From this we get "trumped up charges" referring to corrupt prosecutions.

In 100 years will people be accused of "doing a trump", to mean either winning a tight contest, or to mean to tell porkies?

To mean someone who is a lying windbag with no moral compass, who finds themselves in a position they are supremely unsuitable for, but their vast ego prevents them from seeing this.

(And I'm being kind there.)

That's an horrific thought! Words attain new meanings when they are used frequently. Are you foretelling a condition where people fitting your definition will pervade society during the coming century?
