spacesailor Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 I thought. We only need five satellites to cover this globe of ours. And a couple at the poles ! SEVEN ? Perhaps they are going to Tether the other 443 in a line. So centrifugal force will push the against the tether & keep them in orbit longer. ( faster spin( like their adverts)) Can also help catch all that debris up there. LoL spacesailor
Marty_d Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 Talking about tethers, I wish they'd invent a material strong enough to create a space elevator. Just imagine that... instead of blowing tons of rocket fuel to lift a few hundred kg to orbit, an oversized lift car could do the same thing at 5 kph.
spacesailor Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 I Tried that with a Kite & a mile of string. Still fell to Earth when the wind died. LoL spacesailor

Old Koreelah Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 With ultra-long lines the weight of the cable becomes a limiting factor. Before sonar, depth-sounding of oceans involved miles of heavy cable that could break under its own weight.
spacesailor Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 I must try it again with Fishing line. LoL spacesailor
nomadpete Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 There's bound to be something on eBay that'll do it. But you have to be patient, it takes a month to get it delivered from china
