octave Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 More Heresy. . . .hasn't anyone told this ex Greenpeace clown that the science is settled beyond any argument ? Burn the witch ! Why is this mans "evidence" more compelling than NASA, JAXA ESA CSIRO and just about every scientific organisation around the world?

Bruce Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 There are parts of the US where warming has already exceeded 2 degrees, and these are not just urban hot spots. Gosh it must be hard for deniers as the evidence they need to ignore or double-talk around is increasing so fast.

Old Koreelah Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 There are parts of the US where warming has already exceeded 2 degrees, and these are not just urban hot spots. Gosh it must be hard for deniers as the evidence they need to ignore or double-talk around is increasing so fast. Deniers always seem to find a natural reason for the evidence of climate change. Despite humans decimating lots of natural environments and causing lots of extinctions when our numbers and technology were far less destructive than today, they can't possibly accept that humans have anything to do with changing the atmosphere. The climate is changing so fast that lots of species have moved far from their original ecosystem. Locals in Yukon told me that they now find mountain lions, 1500km north of their original home range.
Litespeed Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 Sadly the high pole is already melting and very quickly. Meanwhile Iceland just lost a glacier. But Scomo said f....k you to the pacific
facthunter Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 We, being greedy and uncaring and tending to BULLY people readily, consider a damaging but profitable (in the short term if ever) enterprise more important than the place where they live, ACTUALLY surviving. What a con act. These people realise what is really happening Sco Mo has kicked them in the GUTS because his Party is so divided it will disintegrate on this issue. They knew it was during the election and spoke some soothing words but after the deal was sold WHAT Climate Problem? We got re-elected. .There's now no climate problem except most of the rest of the World now KNOWS for sure that we put profit above decency and caring and we will have extra tarifs imposed on us by countries which have done some of the hard work. already. Nev
Old Koreelah Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 Australia's standing in our neighbourhood has been greatly diminished by this government's short-sighted defence of their mates in the fossil fuel sector. Alan Jones's grubby comments just make it worse. If I ever get to travel again, as Nev suggests, I would be wise to cultivate a kiwi accent.
pmccarthy Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 I see no debate on this thread. It is in a self-reinforcing loop.
octave Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 I see no debate on this thread. It is in a self-reinforcing loop. Indeed, debating science requires the consideration of data. I do try to post links from reputable sources. The usual response seems to be some kind of a suggestion that the world's scientists are faking evidence. This is not unusual, youtube is full of so-called experts (some with medical qualifications) calling into question the safety and efficacy of vaccination or perhaps the odd geologist who doubts evolution. Personally, I will go with the peer-reviewed research. This is not a belief but an acceptance. I would love it if the theory was able to be debunked. The title of this thread suggests that there is still "debate" amongst scientists however this is not quite correct. Whilst there are a few individuals who disagree, the list is pretty small and unimpressive. Of course, there are disagreements about the magnitude of the problem etc but this is true of any scientific theory. At its heart climate change is firstly a scientific proposition, what we do about it is brings in economics and politics. The problem is some on both sides see it purely as political. I am sure people on this forum make judgments about me when I post but I am not advocating a life free of technology, quite the opposite. I believe that the way forward is through advancements in technology.

What sort of refugee and social unrest problem do you think that will cause? . Nev Australia, a major exporter of fossil fuels and perceived as a near-empty, rich country that helped cause their problems, will be expected to take in massive numbers of refugees.
facthunter Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 When we don't have enough water for most of the place and it's needing to use desal even on the coast? Overall it's the driest continent (Barring antarctica) on the earth. It's an illusion that it could support a big population Probably already over the level of sustainability at the current figure (but so may many other parts of the world. WATER is the big deal and reliable and clean so it's able to be used without reverse osmosis.. Nev.
facthunter Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 OK. The earth is not flat. Is that debateable? Nev
willedoo Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 OK. The earth is not flat. Is that debateable? Nev Yeah, but you've cheated Nev. You've seen it from an aeroplane.
Bruce Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 PM, I would love to find that global warming was not happening. The implications of global warming are frightful. And I have some good mates who are deniers. Burt Rutan is somebody I respect, as is Mike Borgelt, and they both disagree with global warming. My take from this is that there is no hope for the human race if global warming is true. The deniers and doubters, plus those who sort of believe but not enough to make any sacrifice, are carrying the day.

(Snow-ball Earth). spacesailor Indeed, the asteroid that is thought to have done in dinosaurs first caused cooling due to particulate matter in the atmosphere and then warming from CO2 which is thought to have lasted around 100 000 years. This does not account for the increased warming since the industrial revolution. You should not believe me though, do some research and compare what different sources say.
Bruce Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 Why was Scomo so silly as to front up at Tuvalu with his pro-coal stance? I appreciate that he was under pressure from the US to counter Chinese influence in the area, but golly how stupid was he to go there? Especially with that message, which is, that Australia will continue to mine the coal which is causing them to go under the sea?
Litespeed Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 Silly is not a word I would use when discussions about the LNP and global warming arise. Sociopathic at best. They know what they do and even know it costs more to do nothing. But they don't give a shite as long as their mates get ahead.
Bruce Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 I don't entirely discount that theory Litespeed, but I reckon the main thing is that the cost of mitigation occurs right now, while the benefits are years away. And since most people only think a few weeks ahead at most, it is good politics to pay lipservice to global warming while doing nothing of consequence about it. That is the path the whole world seems to be following. I liked Dick Smith's idea about how decisions needed to be made by the under 30's. At least they will reap the rewards or pay the price, while us oldys can refuse to do anything in the knowledge that we will be dead before the worst happens.
pmccarthy Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 There are global leaders who are inclined to warm and fuzzy social policies (and that is fine) but most around the world have been well briefed on the risks and benefits of any action they might take. They are not stupid, they are better informed than the general public. They have to ignore the hype and hysteria and make decisions in the best interest of their constituents. What most cannot do, Trump excepted, is to speak as skeptics because it would be political suicide.

What most cannot do, Trump excepted, is to speak as skeptics because it would be political suicide. PM I agree that our leaders have available to them lots of expert opinions that we, the general public, may not. Trouble is, they tend to hand-pick their advisors, and "experts" from the mining lobby and the denialistist side seem to be prominent. Never forget that the major object of any politician is not the future well-being of our nation; it's to get re-elected, so they must keep their big donors happy. Australia's government is bad enough, but Trump has appointed lobbyists to prominent positions of power. Their mission: to overturn decades of progress in environmental protection, pollution controls and scientific advancement.
octave Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 In many ways I suspect that business may be ahead of government. Mining boss warns of ‘mass extinctions’
Litespeed Posted August 17, 2019 Posted August 17, 2019 Ah......we are doing the same as trump. The LNP have stacked the public service and any government body with their mates and donors. How else do we explain a bunch of climate denier business groups getting $463 million to " help" the barrier reef. Instead of giving it to the world leader and governments own agency. Yes that's right, to silence any dissent and get the actions they want.
