Bruce Tuncks Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 There is a prediction around that Australia will spend billions of tax money building sea-walls to protect the property of the rich. 1
facthunter Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 WE'll see but the main thing is acknowledging that it will cause a big problem and it will cause bigger problems than a few sea walls which would most likely be ineffective anyhow. Nev 1
Bruce Tuncks Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 I didn't say that the sea walls will be effective, only that they will be expensive and their cost will not be carried by the rich. 1
facthunter Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 WE'LL SEE. The peasants may be revolting. The rich picked their bed so they can LIE in it. . What happens if there's an East Coast Sunami?..People LOVE to live right on the waters edge, where everything RUSTS. Nev 2
Old Koreelah Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 True Nev. We have bicycles at our kid’s place, 15km from the briney, and they corrode fast! Same for my mate’s collection of motorcycles, which will double in size when we relocate his cousin’s bikes to Lismore. The most effective anti-corrosion regime I’ve seen was in Cairns, where heaps of historic racers are housed in an old cold store; the air-con reduces moisture in the air. 1
facthunter Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I used to keep mine in my coolstore at Boga. Because of the dust and chemicals. It was well sealed. Nev 2
Bruce Tuncks Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 How can republicans in Texas still claim that their current heatwave is "natural"? They sure are saying that global warming is a hoax. I reckon they have been paid for by the fossil fuel lobby. 1
facthunter Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 On a recent AVWEB survey relating to avgas the largest % vote was for the "It's a Hoax" Box. 1
old man emu Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 If the Northern Hemisphere is getting cooked, why isn't the Southern Hemisphere being snap frozen? It would seem that we of the South are protected by the oceans which lap at our shores.
Jerry_Atrick Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I was reading somethign about it the other day; but can't find it now; and to be honest, I can't recall too much about it But, apparently, ti was quite cold a year ago: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/jun/23/if-global-heating-is-a-thing-why-is-so-called-right-now-weather I wouldn't get too complacent about Australia being protected from climate change: https://australian.museum/learn/climate-change/climate-change-impacts/ https://www.csiro.au/en/research/environmental-impacts/climate-change/climate-change-information Or with a little more dramatic effect: https://theconversation.com/seriously-ugly-heres-how-australia-will-look-if-the-world-heats-by-3-c-this-century-157875 On it being a hoax, well, the ecology of earth loves to be in on a hoax, it seems...
old man emu Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I've watched a couple of videos recently dealing with global weather. Obviously due to audience numbers they are focused on the Northern Hemisphere, but this one does deal with the whole globe. It is talking about the Earth's atmospheric circulation system. While we are preparing for the a very dry Summer, the Northern Hemisphere has suffered the effect of an El Niño event.
facthunter Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 The biggest hoax is making out it's a hoax. Nev 1 1
onetrack Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 What puzzles me is the Northern Hemisphere weather agencies - particularly NOAA - have recently produced definitive statements that an El Nino event is for the Pacific is in progress. But the BOM doesn't agree, and is "fence-sitting", stating the current level of El Nino is at "Alert" - and saying there is a "possibility" that an El Nino MAY develop later in the year. So it appears to me that even major weather forecasters can't agree on what is happening as regards climatic events. And to me, part of this problem is that they're all examining weather every day to try and find the climate for the decade. Climate is an average - and the definition of climate is - "the average weather conditions of a particular place over a 30 year period ". http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/outlook/
facthunter Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 The difference is known to scientists who deal with this stuff. Trends are what you look for, but higher than EVER recorded has meaning too. Nev
Bruce Tuncks Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 What about the antarctic sea ice? The lack of it this year can only be the result of increasing ocean temperarures. 1
onetrack Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Climate records are full of historical events that show there are extremes of weather over various periods of time. A few hot years doesn't make for a major climatic shift, and a few dry years doesn't make for a mega-drought. 1933 to 1936 were record-breaking hot years, too - but it didn't mean the climate was altering on a large scale. https://www.weather.gov/arx/heat_jul36#:~:text=The "Dust Bowl" years of,Midwest and Great Lake States. https://www.farmprogress.com/marketing/the-twin-six-day-heat-waves-of-june-1933 https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/clim/30/7/jcli-d-16-0436.1.xml https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/58674244

The scientific evidence is not relying on individual events. Whether it be sea temperature or surface temperature the temperature has risen and the rate is increasing. High-temperature records are being broken more often. Sea temperature in Florida reaches 38C - potentially a world record, Note - I linked to a conservative news source not a lefty source. octave Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 It is hard to deny that fuel companies knew about the dangers of CO2 from burning fuels. They knew it and publicly admitted it years ago although privately put money into campaigns to deny the science. This is much the same as tobacco companies. 1 1

Nev In those at-risk countries are enough boats and ships to carry millions in our direction. It’s far too late to argue about the science. The court of world opinion is gonna be very hard on the Lucky Country. We’re seen as a rich, empty land and will be blamed for doing more than our share to cause this disaster. 1 1
