They do FT?….mmmm seems to me not too many true refugees can afford the US$20,000 for the boat ride

Most of our immigration is skilled, taking jobs and training and a skilled future from our kids. How poor does someone need to be to a refugee?

Since win did having some money have anything to do with seeking Asylum...????Seriously...was it an wrong assumption and the logic gene is missing or did the newspaper say it?

Well my version of a true refugee is the poor dude and his family who have very little and are being persecuted for either their religion or at worst even where they live. These people do not have US$20,000 thats like us having a million dollars sitting there in your tin in the back yard. Most of the refugees who can afford these prices are not the battler more than likely they are well to do people who no doubt could be persecuted for their religion or just that they are richer than most where they live. I would be more happier with the ones that when they come here become part of our lives not get in their own communities and don't participate in what we can offer here and genuinely appreciate the chance they have been given but there doesn't seem to be too much of that sort of immigration happening. There should be some rules when you come here and that is you must learn english and you should integrate into our country and our lifestyles. I don't care what religion or colour you are so long as you don't push it down my throat or order a Jihad or some other non considerate barrow you want to push. You have come here with another chance at starting a new life with plenty of opportunities to actually have far more than you could ever have had from where you came.

I truly don't care if you are rich or poor per say so long as for every rich or well off one we bring a poor one in. This place was built on immigrants 10 pound poms and italians and greeks and vietnamese etc and generally most have integrated well and this makes up our diverse range of food and cultures which I think makes our country a better place. The current system in not fair to all that is what I object to.

That's crap, yes we have some unemployment, but we also have a lot of jobs our enemployed won't do, or are unwilling to skill themselves for. I believe, that in this country, if you don't have a job, you don't want one. Nothing to do with the "forrins" taking them.

I think his point is that If you can afford to slip out the back door, go through several other countries, pay someone a heap to boat you to Australia and destroy any personal docs to get here, that your refugee status is extremely questionable. IMHO, if you arrive here that way, and get all stroppy about getting a roof over your head, free medical and food and start riots while they check your background, you should probably be sent home anyway, because if where you came from is better than that, you aren't a refugee.

Jeez it's easy for us to pass comment about how people aren't really refugees when no one is threatening our family or trying to kill us. And yeah of course if it happened to us we'd stop at the nearest deadsh*t country and live in misery rather than trying to make it to a first world country where we'd feel both safe and happy. Because of course we don't care about whether our kids have a future growing up. How could we care about our kids when we're foreigners.

How long is it fair to be locked up while they "check your background"? A month? Two? A year? 4 years? How long would it be before you thought you were entitled to get upset? Remember - despite what some say on here, you have committed no crime by seeking asylum. You have not been charged, you have not been found guilty in a court of law. When someone who has killed a child while drink driving, or king-hit and killed someone, gets less time than you do... would you get upset?

It takes as long as it takes to do the job properly. If the conditions here are worse than where you were, you shouldn't be here.

How would you determine who is disabled? I know of quite a few people who are on disability pensions who should not be, it is a real problem with our system. There are people who think the world owes them a living and they have only only one ambition in life and that is to be on a disability pension, and guess who they vote for? ALP.

And there are those in desperate need who quietly sit and hope that life will not get worse. People running below the horizon or who have fallen through the cracks. People without families or friends to look out for them or the frail or the disabled unable to ask for anything. If you tighten up the rules these are the first people to get screwed.

Being a little bit flexible allows some trickle down to these people so that they don't totally lose out on what the lucky country should be sharing among all its people.

Australia does have the ability, either forensically or legislatively, to collect the unjustified excesses from the top end of town before they start screwing the bottom.

Being fair is not restricted to the ALP. All parties have the capacity to do good, we just need them all to do it (NOW)

latest poll results are in...

“The ALP (52.5%, unchanged since the final Morgan Poll of 2013) has maintained its clear lead over

the L-NP (47.5%, unchanged) on a two-party preferred basis in the first major public opinion poll of

2014. The ALP’s lead is stronger amongst women: ALP (55.5%, down 2.5%) cf. L-NP (44.5%, up 2.5%)

while men give the L-NP (51%, down 2%) cf. ALP (49%, up 2%) a slight advantage on a two-party

preferred basis.

“The New Year begins with concerning news for the Abbott Government as today’s Roy Morgan

December unemployment figures show Australian unemployment rising to 1.411 million (up 143,000

from November 2013). The Roy Morgan unemployment rate of 11.2% is the highest since January

1995 (11.3%) – nearly twenty years ago. In addition, a further 1.092 million Australians (8.6% of the

workforce) are under-employed. A record high total of 2.503 million (up 99,000) Australians are

looking for work or looking for more work.

“These results show the most important priority for the Abbott Government in 2014 is to

undertake significant labour market reforms – Australia’s full-time employment has dropped to

7.395 million – the lowest since January 2013 (7.196 million). The decline in full-time employment is

a clear indicator that businesses are reluctant to hire full-time employees, a key to ensuring

Australia’s economy grows strongly.”

Well if you want to rock up with no documents what do they expect……they destroy them

Or never had them in the first place.

Australia, an affluent, modern, western democracy, is the home of some people with passports, drivers licences and birth certificates which are essential to proving identity. If you come from a poor country and have never traveled or owned a car there is a good chance that you will have no identity papers. No papers, no visa, no entry by air to try your luck.

Even though we live in an affluent, modern, western democracy there would be a large number of people living here without identity paperwork, for one reason or another.

When the gun is at anyone's head and they need to escape the clutches of their country what are their chances of having the right paperwork at the right time. A lack of papers should never be a presumption of bad intentions.

OK, so you live in Unley (for arguments sake) and there is a job available working for Maccas in the Pilbarra, say, at the absolute minimum wage, in a town with miners wages with a very high average, where accommodation costs have been inflated because of high demand - how would you get there if you didn't have a car and how would you live if Maccas just give you 2 shifts a week (because they can).

(for arguments sake), Sorry Col but that is about the total value of your post. Tell me why I can advertise for a dairy farm hand locally and recieve no response, whe n I know several people connected with my social circle don't have jobs and have no intention of getting one.

Remember we are talking about the people arriving on boats here...are you trying to tell me that someone who can front up the US$20,000 to get on those boats does NOT have ay means of identification?????....someone from a refugee camp in the congo or sudan yes I can understand it totally but not in the boat case...they wilfully destroy or do not bring documentation at all so if they want to do that well they can sit in a detention camp for as long as it takes

Don't see you giving footnotes to your opinions TP.

Of course not, an opinion is a personal opinion.

However the post from FT was "latest poll results are in....: followed by detailed analysis. Without a source note it carries no weight at all - it could have been put together by the town drunk. With a source, it's possible to judge the accuracy of the poll reasonably well.

Then move to where the work is , it works for the rest of us. Maccas is for part time students who want pocket money.

Having said that, there are people in my small town who have 2 or 3 part time jobs to make ends meet.

A lot of hypothetical dribble coming in, and FT you need to name the source of your information, unless you just typed up what sounded like a good position at the time.

The ALP (52.5%, unchanged since the final Morgan Poll of 2013)

have a guess!
