Methusala Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I think that owning your home gives you an un-accounted for stream of income in that you don't have rent to pay. It would be appropriate to assess this rent figure, adjusted for expenses eg. rates, maintenance etc as part of a person's income. It is a mistake to assess wealth on the basis of the value of the house you occupy. I was able to buy a good block of land when young and then build my house on it. I reckon that the total outlay, adjusted to today's income, was about $90- 100k. Try to do that now! Don

Either that, or a fishing rod with hundreds of hooks baited with crap to catch the unsuspecting
fly_tornado Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Is there much work for helicopter/fixed wing aircraft maintainers? I can drive and fix asphalt plant stuff as well. happy to work for 12 hours a day for $50? no work cover, no holidays, no super? brazil sounds awesome
M61A1 Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 happy to work for 12 hours a day for $50? no work cover, no holidays, no super? brazil sounds awesome Depends on how much it costs to live doesn't it? I'd rather be poorer and have a bit of freedom to think for myself, than earn well & spend most of it conforming to regulation.

Don I'm a bit unsure of this one....someone who works hard and forgoes luxury earlier in life, to set themselves up, can be penalised compared to those who spent all their money living it up, then want to be supported by the taxpayer.
Marty_d Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 We have the right to oppose other undesirables, yes our ancestors were undesirable to the indigenous folk, it doesn't mean I should feel guilty about that and let it happen again. If the Aboriginals had better border control things might have worked better for them. We have the option of better border control, use it wisely, there a few European countries regretting their loose immigration policies at the momentYes, I agree that it was essentially an invasion, but there have been a lot of countries change hands over the years, are we going to demand that we go back and give them all of those countries/continents back to the first provable inhabitants? Not at all. I'm in favour of fair compensation to Aboriginal nations when we want to use the land they've occupied for generations. I'm not in favour of moving borders around. There's been a hell of a lot of damage caused by world leaders carving up continents without regard to tribal areas etc, but you can't unscramble the egg. It was probably a mistake to compare the first fleet to the current situation, back then the Aborigines faced a better armed and technologically superior force. The modern equivalent would be if the USA decided to invade us. I don't believe that generational guilt is a good thing either, I don't feel guilty personally about what was done 200 years ago, any more than a modern German should feel guilty about Hitler.

What about people that inherit money and use various tax loop holes to avoid paying tax and now qualify for a pension? They worked hard, they deserve a pension, its just not fair is it?

They worked hard, they deserve a pension, its just not fair is it? Yes, according to Gina Rinehart anyone can work hard and become a billionaire. Especially if your daddy leaves you a massive fortune and a thriving business.
fly_tornado Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 It seems grossly unfair to deny someone a pension merely because they own a $10M house.
turboplanner Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 It seems grossly unfair to deny someone a pension merely because they own a $10M house. Go do your research and see whether you would get a cent of pension on that before waving the red rag.
coljones Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 It seems grossly unfair to deny someone a pension merely because they own a $10M house. Unfair? Why?
fly_tornado Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Weren't we always told in school that Australian's get treated equally? Have you noticed how Abbott has changed since the election? Haven't seen him in the flouro vest once and you never see him on the news! Not like the good old days, you couldn't shut him up about how good a government he would run.
turboplanner Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Weren't we always told in school that Australian's get treated equally? Ah maybe you were; that's the Communist credo
Gnarly Gnu Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 This is an interesting read: "Check out what communism did for the environment" Also, basic political systems explained:
Gnarly Gnu Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 This is good: He said the number of asylum-seekers arriving on boats had fallen by more than 80 per cent since the Coalition's operation began four months ago. "This government is stopping the boats,'' Mr Morrison said. Wonder what is happening with the 30,000 odd illegal 'future ALP voters' already here. BTW funny that my Moslem contacts here (not illegals) said they wouldn't vote for Gillard because she is an unmarried concubine. Another dud plan?
fly_tornado Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Australia has turned back another boat which Indonesian authorities believe was unseaworthy, leaving local villagers to rescue stranded asylum seekers from the ocean. Indonesian authorities have quoted the asylum seekers on board saying Australian navy personnel fired shots as part of the operation to turn around the boat carrying 25 people. metalman Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Your really having trouble getting this, FT, firstly they are illegal immigrants, nothing at all like refugees or asylum seekers. Second ,Indonesia is a hugely corrupt country that postulates about their sovereignty yet thinks nothing of allowing ours to be afflicted by criminal activities originating in their country. Third ,and most haters of free speech really bung this on, Islam is a religion ,not a race, so to call someone with an adverse option of the Islamic cult a racist is ,frankly, ridiculous( in fact it seems fine to give the Christian faith a blast ,but please don't pick on the Muslims) fourthly ,your shining knights ,the Rudd,Gillard,Rudd circus killed a lot of these illegals with rubbish watermelon driven policy, which brings us to why your so annoyed the the LNP is trying to stop this activity, less boat lowers the risk to lives, unless of course it's the mere thought that something enacted by anyone other than the watermelons could actually be a good thing ! As for telling us everything that happens ,every minute of every damn hour , I wonder if Gillard and her nemisis are sitting at home thinking " maybe the 24/7 coverage of our train wreck wasn't such a good thing" ,

I thought I made it quite clear in an earlier post that Islam is equally as silly, if not slightly sillier, than any other religion. By the way in the interest of fairness, why is Islam a "cult" and Christianity a "faith"? As for Gillard and Rudd being a "train wreck", yes there were a lot of things that could have been done better, but let's just reserve the comparative judgement until the current clowns have a chance to really stuff up shall we?

Haven't seen him in the flouro vest once and you never see him on the news! Not like the good old days, you couldn't shut him up about how good a government he would run. That's because it's been brought home to him how being in government is a bit harder than slagging off while in opposition. Kind of like if I were to sit at home telling a footballer on the TV how useless he is, as opposed to me getting into a game.
fly_tornado Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Abbott's not getting any traction with the electorate with any issue at the moment, the Australian public still aren't buying his government.

Bikky Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Is there much work for helicopter/fixed wing aircraft maintainers? I can drive and fix asphalt plant stuff as well. I believe there is. Aviation is a burgeoning industry here and having fluent English is an advantage. But... there are many hoops to jump through. It's not an easy process. PM me if you want details. FT is exaggerating just a little about working conditions here. True - wages are lower than in OZ but there are many benefits offered by employers. Private health and dental cover (usually for the entire family), life insurance, meal allowances, fuel cost reimbursement and more. And of course, paid holidays! Food is good and cheap. A kilogram of high quality coffee costs the equivalent of AUD $20. I bought 1200 gm of good cheese for AUD $10 this morning. Seriously, if you can't live on BR$50 a day, you're doing it wrong! I worked in remote Aboriginal communities for my last 12 years in Oz and I have seen and heard more than my fair share of racism and bigotry. Enough to last a lifetime and all indications are, this is getting worse - not better! A racist remark here will land you in jail and Brazilian jails have a deserved reputation. I voted with my feet. No regrets so far and I have no intention of returning.
